Time to discover

The United Kingdom's freshwater wetlands and waterways are incredibly diverse. From small ponds and trickling streams to gushing rivers and massive reservoirs. From the River Severn to the Norfolk Broads, the Scottish lochs to the ponds of our back gardens; with such a huge variety of habitats it’s no wonder that these areas support such a diverse range of plants and animals.

The County of Suffolk is no exception and a lot of my photography has focussed around the diverse habitats and wildlife found close to home. With good local access and familiarity some of the most rewarding projects I've worked on have literally been on my "doorstep".

It's a constant journey of discovery which never ceases to amaze me; and this portfolio represents just a small selection of my favourite moments captured along the rivers and waterways in the surrounding countryside.

Out and about

Sudbury water meadow is one of my favourite locations to while away the hours at the break of day. Situated along the River Stour it provides a stunning back drop to the town and is a veritable haven for wildlife providing some great photographic opportunities.

Knowing the location well really puts you at an advantage as you begin to understand the rhythm and pace of the habitat as it cycles through the seasons. Kingfishers, Little Grebes, Herons, Cormorants and Little Egrets are a regular feature along the river bank; and if you’re really lucky you may even spot an otter as they also typically frequent this location.

It is however the Swans which in my mind that take centre stage; especially at sunrise when the light is soft and the morning mist lingers on still waters. The use of prevailing light drives my photography and I can often be found with my camera rig set up in the river, waders on and positioned along the flight path at day break when the rest of the world is in slumber.
